Background and History.
- A Fairly new Religion created in North Eastern United States.
- The official name is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" (or LDS for short)
- The LDS was founded by Joseph Smith in New York State in the United States in 1830, Smith had received a revelation from God through an Angel, and then through a book inscribed on golden plates, which Smith had translated the writing on the plates to, "The Book of Mormon", which tells the story of ancient peoples in America
- The book was published in 1830.
- In 1847, Smith and his brother, Hyrum were martyred in prison. They were killed by a mob of armed men The Church
- Founded in 1830 and from the start attempted to convert people into Mormons.
- Sent out missionaries to gain members.
- Many converts were from England.
- Persecution from Mainstream Christian church members forced most Mormons to move to Illinois, where they built a new city in which they could live and worship in peace.
